Commit no nuisance

Commit no nuisance

On Facebook the other day, my sister-in-law posted a picture that made me snort with laughter.

It’s a splendid example of English scolding: “commit no nuisance”.

But it got me thinking about how things get done… and how our whole society is geared to keeping us quiet, keeping us in line, and not making a fuss. When I was at school, I remember a particular teacher. I forget his name, but he was a sports teacher and known for being a total arsehole. I was walking down the corridor with my friends, laughing out loud at something someone had said, when he barked into my face, ‘You! You’re in detention this evening. Ha. That wiped the smile off your face, didn’t it?’And I remember thinking, even back then, that this summed up my experience of school: it sucked the joy out of learning. The whole system was designed to create little cardboard cut-out people, ready to leave school and fit into the process we were all expected to fit into.(I never felt like I fitted in anywhere)We were told – literally – to sit down, shut up, and listen. To learn the facts, and only rarely by the odd wonderful teacher were we encouraged to think. Not once, during my entire school or college career, did any adult hint to me that running my own business might be a possibility. Took me a long time to figure out I had other options. Not once did anyone suggest to me that I might want to cause a nuisance… which was a shame, because I’ve worked out on my own that causing a nuisance is the only way big ideas are shared. It’s the only way problems are solved and the only way we ever create anything worth creating.Be a nuisance.Have a big idea and write it down.Be a nuisance.Write a book that’ll create a change in the world.Be a nuisance.Because it’s the only way you’ll ever get close to reaching your potential.p.s. start being a nuisance right here on my 29-day writing challenge. It’s unlike any other writing challenge you might have done before. It’ll make you laugh, cry, think, and write down Big Ideas.Best of all: it’s free. Join us here.
