Yep, apparently today is telegraph pole appreciation day.
I don’t know, I don’t make them up…
But it did remind me of something: shoes on telephone wires. Remember I mentioned those a few days ago?
Well, I said I’d come back to them, and here I am.
You still see shoes on telephone wires today, but I feel like there were more when I was a kid. I don’t know.
I do know that I want to know wtf is going on there though—why shoes in the air?
I went a-hunting for information, and found several explanations but nothing definitive. Here are a few—you decide:
- The ancient custom of shoe tossing, particularly to mark an event or rite of passage, like getting married or the end of a school year.
- Bullying—someone steals your shoes and then flings them up high where you’ll never get them back.
- Drugs—here’s the spot where you can score your Es or whatever.
- Practical joke on drunks—steal their shoes when they’re passed out and fling them at a wire.
- Commemorating the death of a gang or group member.
