Today marks the beginning of National Storytelling Week, so I’d like to hear a story from you.
Or perhaps you could write about a story that means a lot to you.
If you fancy writing your own little story, here’s a framework that’ll help:
- Set the context: give a little backstory as an introduction to the world in your story.
- Identify the catalyst: the inciting incident, the event that changes things.
- Introduce the challenge to be overcome.
- Transformation: what’s the plan to overcome the challenge?
- Outcome: how does the protagonist and their world change as a result of all this?
This works for ficiton and nonfiction, for stories short and long—and every good story follows this structure, more or less. Mess with it at your peril.
Set your timer for 5 minutes, and sketch out the details of your story. Who knows what it’ll turn into?
TTFN,
Vicky
