It’s been an exciting week here at Casa Moxie.
I’ve had a LOT of conversations (way more than usual) so I’ll be spending much of this weekend hiding in a darkened room with my headphones on.
But the conversations have been so good.
I’ve met some wonderful people.
I’ve delivered my kickass Kickstart Your Book workshop for the fourth time, to 6 wonderful future authors.
I’ve booked in a new client to do a VIP Book Breakthrough Day in August to help him write a book that’s going to be absolutely fascinating.
(I only do one VIP Day per month so if you’re interested — I’m now booking for September and October!)
And I’m working with three incredible women in my Book Coach In Your Pocket programme.
Actually, two of them are writing books (and making brilliant progress) and one of them is levelling up her social media and email sales game.
I keep getting little unprompted comments from them like:
“Loving this!!”
“THANK YOU!! so so helpful.”
“I just did this one and was laughing throughout.”
“Thanks for this. It was helpful and a cool way to think differently about it all.”
“This is madness but I love it 😂😂 what a strange and beautiful exercise! I actually feel like a weight has been lifted”
“I’m so mad at you for this challenge! You are awesome”
“I’m really enjoying this! It’s a really nice way to break it down. Hurrah so far!”
So, would you like to join me for Book Coach In Your Pocket (or Writing Coach if you’re not working on a book right now) in August?
I have three spaces and I’d love to fill one of ‘em with you.
Okay. Time for the Friday Goodie Bag!
The ONLY tip you need to become a great writer
Sometimes I like to share writing that has made me laugh, and this guy regularly makes me CACKLE.
Here’s his satirical and ludicrous take on the state of the online marketing world right now. Enjoy!
Goblin Tools for the autistic/adhd among us
The way I gasped when I saw this — and I cannot now remember where I saw it.
This little tool was created by neurodivergent people for neurodivergent people, and it’s really useful. I often struggle to read the intent behind, well, everything. I struggle with nuance and reading tone and mood, especially in real-life social situations. But I also find it quite tricky in written conversations, quick email back and forths, and I know I can be quite blunt.
So now I have this tool (specifically The Judge) to run through things I write to check I’m not being an arse, or stuff I receive to see if I’m reading it accurately.
It’s very cool. Check it out.
Your Brain on Doodles
I KNEW IT! I was always in trouble at school for doodling — on notebooks, exercise books, text books, pencil cases, desks, my own skin, and sometimes the wall. And, defacement of other people’s property aside, I KNEW I wasn’t doing anything wrong.
Now science proves it! Doodling is magical for focus, creativity, and general fun.
The Glasgow Zine Library
One of my favourite magazines is The Idler and the latest issue has an article about zines — home-made magazines and fanzines, and they are things of beauty.
I love them for multiple reasons: the creativity, the weird little obsessions and hobbies people have and feel passionate enough about to create a whole magazine for, the home-madeness, and — perhaps most important — the ability to give a voice to the voiceless.
Traditionally it was super difficult for anyone on the margins to have their voices heard, and zines were a way of getting ideas into the world, spreading news, keeping in touch, and staying under the radar of oppressive systems.
Now, of course, we have social media — but that is still controlled by oppressive systems.
Zines are still out there and I love that for us.
And one chap has gathered so many of them into a library in Glasgow, and I’m gonna visit Glasgow just to go here.
(Also h/t to my buddy Marc Thomas who has his own online zine which you can find here. Unsurprisingly he also sent me info about other paper-based zines which I LOVE.)
This musical food
This dude connected different types of food up to his synth, and recorded the music they played.
I don’t understand what it is or how it works but I love it. I particularly enjoyed the music the mushroom made.
Put this together with this and see what happens.
^^That is what creativity is.
Have a wonderful weekend and remember:
If you want to make something, go and make it.
Start now. Right now. There’s no better time.
And if what you want to make is a book or great writing, and you’re struggling to do it, ask for help.
I can help.
