MicroBook Magic FAQs

What IS a MicroBook?

A MicroBook is a tiny version of a regular book. Instead of writing 200-300 pages and 60-80,000 words, a MicroBook is around 50-80 pages. Micro but MIGHTY.

It’s for people who long to write a book but feel overwhelmed at the idea of writing a weighty tome (I hear ya!) — or who want to deliver a short, sweet idea with a bang. A MicroBook can be the perfect option for you.

Past MicroBook Magic alumni have written memoirs, how-tos, philosophy ideas, essay collections, manifestos, introductions to a topic, journals, workbooks, travel diaries, cultural musings — just about anything you imagine could become a MicroBook, and this course will help you finally get your book done.

They can make a massive difference to a reader’s life without overwhelming them with information, fluff, and padding — or without it becoming an extended sales letter (we’ve all read books that could’ve been a blog post, right?)

And finally, it’s a book you can complete and publish in a very short time — just 6-8 weeks in all.

When does MicroBook Magic begin and end? What’s the schedule?

Onboarding week starts today (but it’s not too late to join!) and the first live call is on Tuesday March 7. Here’s the schedule for MicroBook Magic Season 3:

  • Monday February 27, 2023: onboarding week begins
  • Friday March 3, 2023: very last day to enroll
  • Tuesday March 7, 2023: first live call — let the adventure begin! 3 pm GMT, 90 minutes
  • Thursday March 9, 2023: Voxer office hours, 2 pm GMT, 120 minutes
  • Tuesday March 14, 2023: second live call! 3 pm GMT, 90 minutes
  • Thursday March 16, 2023: Voxer office hours, 2 pm GMT, 120 minutes
  • Tuesday March 21, 2023: third live call! 3 pm GMT, 90 minutes
  • Thursday March 23, 2023: Voxer office hours, 2 pm GMT, 120 minutes
  • Tuesday March 28, 2023: fourth live call! 3 pm GMT, 90 minutes
  • Thursday March 30, 2023: Voxer office hours, 2 pm GMT, 120 minutes
  • Tuesday April 4, 2023: MicroBook Magic Author Showcase — time to shine! 3 pm GMT, 90 minutes

All meetings are online — join from anywhere in the world. You can attend live or send your work/questions and watch the recording later, whenever it’s convenient for you.

Do I have to complete my MicroBook in 4 weeks?

No, you don’t have to. You’ll have access to Circle for 2 months after the course ends, and you’ll be able to download your resources and group calls and keep them forever. You’ll also get a writing and publishing checklist that takes you through all the steps to get your MicroBook out there.

Some people finish writing and editing their book in 4 weeks. Some finish their first draft in 4 weeks, then edit afterwards. Others make a wonderful start and then go onto finish their book in the following weeks.

One alumnus wrote her first draft during November, edited and polished it in December, got it typeset and ready to go in January, and published at the end of January.

Take all the time you need — there’s no deadline except the one you create for yourself.

I’m super busy and have a lot going on. How much time will I need to put aside to complete this course?

That depends on the type of book you want to write.

A super-simple book, like 10 thoughts on gardening, could be drafted in a weekend!

A more complex book that requires research, fact-checking, or interviewing — say 5 simple tools to help you let go of negative perfectionism without the frustrating mindset work — could take you 4 weeks to write, plus a little editing time.

I encourage you to make space for 5-7 hours a week writing time, plus the live calls. And you get free access to my twice-daily live writing sessions, to help you structure your writing time.

During onboarding week, you’ll go through your schedule and figure out where you can make time to write and complete the course.

What can I do to get ready before the course? I want to give myself the best chance of success.

Great! Onboarding week will give you everything you need to get started, so when we have the first live call, you’ll have work to bring for feedback. Then, in week 1, you’ll know exactly what you’re going to write, how, and why.

What if I want to write a long book?

Although this is a MicroBook course and I encourage to you to write and publish your MicroBook — there’s no reason why it can’t be the forerunner of a longer book.

I’ve worked with people whose MicroBooks have formed part of their longer book, and given it shape and direction.

Ultimately though, this is your book — and it can be as long or as short as you want.

I’m not very techie. What do I need to know?

I’m not very techie either! Here’s what you need to be able to do to complete this course:

  • Receive and read the emails I send you
  • Set up a Circle account (full instructions provided)
  • Use Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, or Google Docs
  • Download files from Google Drive or Notion (full instructions provided)
  • Type into a document and save it
  • Send documents to me
  • Download files (like PDFs) from the MicroBook Magic course area in Circle
  • Watch v short videos online
  • Upload files to Google Drive or Circle

You don’t need detailed knowledge of specialist writing software, or design skills, to successfully complete this course and write your Microbook. If you can handle the above, you’ll be great. And if you have questions about any of it, I’m right at the end of an email or Vox message.

I’ve already written a book. Can I do this course?

Absolutely! This course is for absolute book beginners, or people who want to write their next book but can’t (for whatever reason) get started.

I have approximately 4,392 book ideas. I can’t pick one. Will this course help me decide?

Yes it will!

As part of onboarding week, you’ll dig into your reasons for writing, and figure out which idea is best for you right now — then we’ll get you writing and finishing it, so you can move onto the next MicroBook idea!

And if you upgrade to the VIP MicroBook Mega, you get two 1-2-1 calls with me. You can use your first one right away and I’ll help you figure out which idea you want to start with.

I have an idea for my MicroBook, but haven’t started it yet. Is the course right for me?

It’s perfect for you! We’ll make sure your idea is clear and just right for a MicroBook, then you’ll discover how to plan it, outline it, and write every element — then edit it and publish it.

I don’t live in the UK. Can I do this course?

Yes you can! I’ve tried to make the live call and office hours times as accessible as possible. They’re in the afternoon in the UK and Europe, and morning in the US.

If you live on the other side of the world, like Australia or New Zealand, you might struggle to make the live calls — but the recordings are always available, and if you attend the live writing sessions, you’ll be able to ask me questions in there too. I’ve had a couple of alumni from the antipodes, and they did fine. In fact, one came back to MicroBook Magic again!

Will I get personalised help — feedback on my writing? Can I ask questions? What about 1-2-1 support?

You will get personalised help and feedback on your writing. The live calls are designed carefully to enable me to go through writing you submit ahead of the call, then there’s open time for anyone to ask questions, whether they’ve sent me work or not.

You can ask as many questions as you like, and I’ll save them up for the live calls or during the Voxer office hours.

You are never alone on this course — and you’ll have the support of your fellow writers, too.

If you upgrade to the VIP MicroBook Mega, you get two 1-2-1 calls with me. There are only 5 VIP places available during each round.

Will the course show me how to create a paperback and digital version of my book?

Yes it will! I’ll show you how to release your book in physical and/or ebook format. You can create multiple formats.

And if you upgrade to the VIP MicroBook Mega, I’ll do all the typesetting for you, and create the files you need to publish it. (Please note, I am unable to typeset complex or image-heavy books, so if you’re not sure, speak to me first.)

I want to sell my book on Amazon and other places online, as well as my website. Will MicroBook Magic show me how to do that?

Yes indeed. I’ll show you how to get your book onto Amazon kdp and IngramSpark, and give you pointers about what you need to do to sell on your own website.

Will someone design and edit the book for me? Is that included in this course?

No. This is a DIY course: I show you how to write, edit, design, and publish a book by yourself. You’ll have instructions to follow in multiple formats: written, video, and audio.

Work through it all, attend the live calls, ask all the questions you need to, and you will finish this course with a manuscript and all the skills and knowledge you need to publish and create a beautiful book.

If you upgrade to the VIP MicroBook Mega, I will proofread and typeset your book for you, in a simple format. There are 5 VIP slots available during each round. (Please note, I am unable to typeset complex or image-heavy books, so if you’re not sure, speak to me first.)

I have ADHD/am neurodivergent, or have other learning requirements. Is this course accessible for me?

I have ADHD too! Many of my clients are neurodivergent and I am experienced in working with people with neurodiversities. I’ve designed this course to be as accessible as possible.

All the resources are available in multiple formats: written, audio, and video with closed captions and transcripts.

If you need something specific to complete this course successfully, or you have questions about accessibility, please email me to discuss at vicky@moxiebooks.co.uk.

I would like to get my book traditionally published. Will this course help me do that?

No. I can certainly point you in the right direction for resources and professionals who may be able to help you, but this course is all about getting your MicroBook written and publishing it yourself.

Indie-publishing and traditional publishing are different paths, and each have advantages and disadvantages. I love working with people who want to self-publish because:

  • You own 100% of your intellectual property, writing, and artwork.
  • You make your own decisions on cover design, interior design, titles, formats. If you want to create an audiobook, release a new edition, or stop selling it, you can do that without asking anyone for permission.
  • You keep 100% of the profits — and you can use your book to build a business on the back end of it. With a traditional publishing deal, authors typically keep only 10-30% of the profits.
  • You can release the book whenever you like, to suit your personal and business plans, rather than being beholden to a publishing timeline.
  • You can create assets and courses and spin-offs from your MicroBook whenever you like, without worrying about breaching your publishing contract.

So many famous, bestselling books were self-published (and some were later picked up by traditional publishers, so it’s not necessarily an either/or thing):

  • The Martian by Andy Weir
  • Wool by Hugh Howey
  • Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James
  • No Thanks by e.e. cummings
  • Double Persephone by Margaret Atwood
  • The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter (really!) which sold 45 million copies in 30+ languages
  • To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf
  • A Lume Spento by Ezra Pound
  • Common Sense by Thomas Paine
  • Emma and Sense & Sensibility by Jane Austen (yep!)
  • Three Stories and Ten Poems by Ernest Hemingway
  • The Joy of Cooking by Irma Rombauer

It’s an incredible way to get your story out into the world, especially if you are from a marginalised background or face discrimination from the traditional publishing world.

No longer is self-publishing the vanity option. In fact, I think these days doggedly pursuing the traditional publishers is more like vanity publishing.

(Although if Penguin knock on my door I will bite their hand off!)

Is this course only for women? Or all genders?

It’s for everyone! Most of my alumni tend to be female, but everyone is welcome: all genders, nationalities, faiths, backgrounds, brains. All humans are welcome here.

I really want to do this, but I’m on a tight budget. Do you offer discounts, payment plans, or scholarships?

Yes!

Other ideas

If you want to do Microbook Magic, but you’re strapped for cash right now, here are some ideas:

  • Ask friends and family to contribute as a birthday, Christmas, holiday, or treat gift.
  • If you have a boss, tell them you’d like to improve your writing skills, learn about the book publishing process, and improve communication skills, and see if they’d be willing to cover the course cost for you. They may well do!
  • What’s your area of speciality? What would you be writing your MicroBook about? If you can speak passionately about something for 30 minutes, you can write a book — and you can create a workshop about it, and give away signed copies of your new MicroBook at the event. It could even help you write your MicroBook. Pre-sell tickets, and use the money to fund this course — and get a firm deadline to work towards!
  • Do a little personal fundraising. Now’s a great time to do a little spring cleaning — what do you have lurking in your cupboards you could sell? Lovely clothes you no longer wear, books you no longer read, or furniture you’d like to clear out? Sell some stuff, make some cash, write your MicroBook!

Can I buy this course for someone as a gift?

Absolutely! Simply enrol as yourself, then email me at vicky@moxiebooks.co.uk and tell me: “I bought MicroBook Magic and I’d like to gift it to someone.” Tell me their name and email address, and if you want it to be anonymous. I’ll contact your lucky friend and let them know!

Will you offer this course in the future?

Yes. I run MicroBook Magic four times per year. The next Season kicks off in September 2023.

Who created MicroBook Magic?

Vicky Quinn Fraser, author and ghostwriter and book coach, created this course.

I was chatting to my friend about how people seemed reluctant to commit to writing a book — and my friend suggested maybe people were just a little overwhelmed right now. And so MicroBook Magic was born in October 2022. Just four weeks later, the first 11 people were writing their MicroBooks.

I’ll never run this as a large-group course — I want to keep it small and mighty, with a maximum of 20 writers (and just 5 VIP spaces each round).

I’m super proud of the incredible books that are coming out of MicroBook Magic.

Learn more about me here.

Why is MicroBook Magic different from other courses?

  1. It’s a small-group adventure, which is why the price is a little higher than other book writing courses out there. I’m not interested in scaling it up to get as many people as possible through the doors. So you’re guaranteed a lot of personal attention from me, twice a week, for 4 weeks.
  2. It’s super-simple. I break everything down into Tiny Beetle Steps, including an onboarding to start you off gently, so nothing is overwhelming. So often, I hear — “I’ve tried for years to write a book, but I couldn’t do it. It was too big and scary. During MicroBook Magic, I did it. I made my dream happen and wrote my book!”
  3. We’re bringing the joy back to writing. There are lots of courses out there that promise to help you write a “bestseller”. I don’t promise that, because it’s not a promise anyone can make. This isn’t about a marketing tick-box. It’s about writing something that matters to you, and it’s about finding the joy in creating it. It’s fun!

What can I do to give myself the best chance of succeeding at writing a MicroBook with you?

Avoid comparisonitis. Every book takes its own time to happen — some people write faster than others, and that’s okay. Look to your fellow writers for support and inspiration — but keep your eyes on your own MicroBook and make it happen.

Enrol early. The sooner you enrol, the better prepared you’ll be. I send out plenty of resources before and during onboarding week to help you get ready.

Schedule time to write. We don’t find time, we make it. During onboading week, I help you make that time — and give you plenty of resources to stick to your commitment to yourself.

Take it one Tiny Beetle Step at a time. Don’t sit down to Write A Book; work through the resources and lessons I provide, and attend the calls, and break it down.

Use my support to the fullest! You get 90 minutes on a live call with me each week for 4 weeks, plus 2 hours a week office hours in Voxer. You can (and should) ask me anything. Send me your work for review and feedback. Ask questions at any time.

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Setting out to write the “perfect” book (doesn’t exist, fyi) or the next NYT bestseller, is unrealistic and frightening. Don’t do it to yourself because it’s the best way I know of to freeze up and write nothing at all.

Instead, set out to write the best book you can write. Treat it as a joyful creative journey and an experiment: what can you create in 4 weeks? How will I feel when I hold my book in my hands?

This sounds magnificent, I’m in. Where do I sign up? How much is it?

Yay! It’s going to be a huge adventure. Season 3 of MicroBook Magic is £950 + VAT (or £1,500 + VAT for one of the 5 VIP places).

Choose your payment option and sign up here:

MicroBook Magic: 1 payment of £950 / 2 payments of £475

MicroBook Mega: 1 payment of £1,500 / 2 payments of £750

After you’ve paid, go check your inbox for a confirmation email. Check spam if you don’t see it. If it still doesn’t turn up, email me at vicky@moxiebooks.co.uk and let me know, and I’ll get right on it.
