Is your book idea too weird?

Ever wondered if your book idea (or you) is too… weird?

Like — you look at all the nonfiction and business books out there, and yours doesn’t seem to fit?

Maybe your face doesn’t fit, or your voice seems too brash, or your story seems a bit too out there compared to others in your niche, or you want to go deeper than others have, or you just don’t seem to fit the bookshelf mould…

If thoughts like this are holding you back from writing your book, come closer. Listen up.

The publishing industry is dominated by a certain type of author, and editor, and decision-maker: conformist, straight, white, able-bodied, male, rich, CIS-het, neurotypical — a narrow band of “normal”, in fact.

(This year’s Booker Prize shortlist is, apart from Percival Everett who is a Black man, filled with white women. I love that so many women are on that list, but still. That’s not diversity.)

Things are getting better in the trad world but it’s still not particularly diverse — and where diversity does sneak in, it’s diluted.

Sanitised. I know of authors who’ve been asked to write in a (token) disabled character — and then when the edits came back, there were comments like, “Not that disabled.”

Authors who’ve been pushed to whitewash their books and use a more Western-sounding pen name.

And that’s a problem.

Visibility matters.

Diverse stories matter.

Incredible things happen when ideas from a range of backgrounds come together.

Plus, it’s just more interesting!

The world wants and needs your story.

Maybe you have a story or a message that:

🔥 Challenges conventional wisdom in your industry
🔥 Talks about what business is like for people who look, sound, or experience the world like you
🔥 Doesn’t really fit in any established publishing container
🔥 Is super entertaining or funny — business and nonfiction doesn’t have to be so serious!
🔥 IS very much like other books in your niche at first glance — and you’re worried the world doesn’t need another (you’re wrong — we do — because your perspective is unique even if your idea isn’t)

Trust me when I say, someone somewhere will be so grateful you wrote your book. Many someones.

Here are some of the Magical MicroBooks (and bigger books) I’ve helped (and am helping) to bring into the world:

  • 🌿 A book about changing paradigms, breaking barriers, and shattering oppressive systems — starting by doing one brand new thing every day (this is a delight)
  • 🌟 Bigness and making the most of your shine (in a world where there are lots of books about the wonders of introverts)
  • 🧠 Why your brain is a magical asshat, for those of us whose brains are asshats (spoiler alert that’s all of us)
  • 📧 A teeny but powerful book about how to get started in email marketing — and not get worn down by it
  • 🍜 Binge-eating and addiction — a ballsy, truthy, hilarious, heartbreaking book from an awesome woman
  • 🌳 A short and crucial book on how to challenge harmful language in schools — without being afraid and without escalating and shaming anyone
  • ✈️ A book for translators who are scared of marketing and don’t know where to start

And so. many. more.

There’s room for your book.

If this sounds like the kind of adventure you’d like to go on —

p.s. Here’s what Yinka has to say about MicroBook Magic:

Consistent Cashflow Solution is a book to help women to get consistent cashflow as a foundation for creating wealth in their business.

The truism of business is ‘No cashflow, no business’. And yet, because we’re all born with poor money mindset stories, no one wants to talk about money. People are working their fingers to the bone, and yet not able to see the returns of their hard work.

I have wanted to write a book since forever and I am someone who is a person of their word. To me, it doesn’t make sense to reverse engineer and try and figure out by myself what someone else is good at. My time is precious and I’m never going to get it back.

Vicky wasn’t asking me to write ‘War & Peace’. She was asking me to write a MicroBook and that premise is that it’s easy to consume. A book that’s easy to consume is also relatively easy to read. She really dissipated the anxiety and the pressure of having this big thing. She made book writing really accessible and achievable (even for someone who is as busy as me). I’d started seven books but only completed one. And the one that’s completed is as a direct result of Vicky’s support and help doing MicroBook Magic.

To say that she’s excellent at what she does is a real understatement. Her suggestions elevated my own self-perception of someone who can write a good quality book. It was a really lovely experience being in a group with other authors. This enabled me to hear really great ideas about more books coming into the world that are so needed. Vicky hot seating, unpacking and elevating people’s books is her actual Ninja skill.

Vicky is amazing, supportive and everything that you would want and need in the person to help you to write your book.

Knowledgeable, compassionate and encouraging, she always sees the best in you, and makes you believe that you can do it too. She inspires with her authenticity and her tenacity helps to build your own confidence and resilience in the process.

Vicky will absolutely help you to write a better book than you would have otherwise written on your own. And she will do it in a way that will transform how you see yourself as an author, and ignite a new spark in you, for the mission that your book is aligned to. I wouldn’t only recommend Vicky, I would ask: ‘What are you waiting for right now?’

I’m so grateful for your support Vicky, thank you for being you, and for everything that you do!

Be like Yinka!
