What people THINK writing a book is like… 🌸 💀

What people think writing a book is like:

What writing a book is actually like:

What joining MicroBook Magic then finally getting this thing done is like:

Come with me. Lemme lift the tablecloth and usher you into the den.

Because you might be wondering: what’s it actually like to write a book?

Well, tbh I don’t know what it’s like for you… but I can tell what it ISN’T like — it’s definitely not like the romantic media portrayal of writers like, for example, Carrie out of Sex and the City.

Honestly, who on earth can make enough of a living to reside in a fancy New York apartment while floating around having cocktails and drifting to a desk for a couple of hours a week to write a gossip column?

Or Jamie out of Love Actually who goes to France to stay in a remote cottage and write his book in a variety of pretty places and fall in love with his non-English-speaking Portuguese maid and just be struck by the muse alllllll the time and write in a montage of hearts and flowers.

wish it were like that. That sounds cool, especially a couple of hours for a gossip column giving me enough of an income to be a lady what lunches. In downtown New York.

Here’s a common reality: I’d like you to picture dishevelled hair (not the sexy kind, the raccoon-in-a-dumpster kind), jogging bottoms, and biscuits.

Swearing and wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Deadlines hurtling towards the writer like angry rhinoceroses? Rhinoceri?

Rhinos.

Endless cups of tea-gone-cold.

But it doesn’t have to be like that, either. Hurrah!

The soft-focus dream montage isn’t true, but the wailing and gnashing of teeth doesn’t have to be true either (at least, not all the time).

I can’t promise zero wailing during MicroBook Magic — I’ve never known a book of any kind to be produced without at least a little gnashing of teeth — but I can promise it’ll be a lot less painful than trying to write your book alone.

And a lot more fun! Because these things should be fun. I’m alllll about the fun.

In week 1, we ease into things gently, I introduce you to the course materials and your fellow writers, we get together on Zoom and chat about your idea and answer any intitial questions and make sure you’re excited and ready to go.

Then in weeks 2-7, we write! I give you everything you need to think, plan, write, and edit your way to your first draft. There’s no overwhelming info dump — just tiny lessons, one per day, and small tasks to get you inching towards your goal. You’ll be amazed at how much you can achieve in just an hour a day, and it all adds up. We meet once a week on Zoom so I can give you feedback on your writing and you can ask me anything at all. And you get to ask me anything during my office hours too.

And in week 8, it’s Showcase time! You get to read a piece of your writing in public. I’ll help you choose and prepare it, and you get to show everyone how amazing your book is going to be, and we have a celebration, and you get the video to share as part of your book promo.

Plus, exclusive access to my creative writing group for FREE for 2 months after MicroBook Magic finishes, so you’re never alone and we can make sure you get this done.
